Values

Putting our set of values or our way of life in writing wasn't an easy task. Mainly because the moment we started putting this in writing, it already altered. We started with a set of Intempt peeps writing down every word that came to mind when thinking about Intempt. We made categories and tried making sentences out of it. We shared that with the whole group, got some good feedback, and slimmed it down to 5 powerful values.

Work smart, never stop learning, create remarkable things, help others and always stop to enjoy the moment.

Customer Obsession

Start with the underserved customer and work backwards. Work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Pay attention to competitors, but they may have adequately addressed the customer pain, so the market won't reward you (as much) for it. Address the underserved customer and build a painkiller and a vitamin for them. Remember that your best friend isn't someone who puts out a fire and waits for the next one; your best friend is someone who does not let the fire anywhere near you.

Ownership

Think long-term. Don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results. Act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just your own area. Never feel, “that’s not my job." Lasting companies are built on stability, throughput, and consistency over long periods of time.

Invent and Simplify

Expect and require innovation and always find ways to simplify complex problems using first principles. Look for new ideas from everywhere and challenge your own. Seek diverse perspectives and work to turn your unknowns into known ones. Ask yourself, what am I assuming, and what are my blindspots? What do I not know about vulnerabilities in my design or friction in my customer experience? How do I find out?

Be Curious, Get Feedback and Learn

We are never done learning and always seek to improve ourselves. Be curious about new ways of doing things and explore the possibilities. When someone unloads negative feedback, listen deeply and resist defending yourself. Why do they have that perspective? Are they crazy? Are they stupid? Remember, they are saying it from their reality; you are free to introspect your own truth and ignore their feedback. But allow them to unload their truth. Remember, nobody 10x's anything without incorporating harsh feedback.

Hire and Develop the Best

We raise the performance bar with every hire and every promotion. We recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization. We develop leaders; we take seriously our role in coaching others. We work on behalf of our people and demystify how we reward our employees with raises and promotions.

Insist on the Highest Standards

We have relentlessly high standards — many people may think these standards are unreasonably high. We are continually raising the bar and driving our people to deliver high-quality products, services, and processes. We ensure that defects do not get sent down the line and that problems are fixed, so they stay fixed.

Think Big and Bold, Act in Small Steps

Thinking “small” (when building a company) isn't natural. We create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. We look around corners for ways to serve customers. We act in small next steps and in terms of compounding to get a big impact over time. If you get one percent better each day for one year, you'll end up thirty-seven times better. Master the art of continuous improvement.

Bias for Action

Speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking and moving quickly to form a new hypothesis when the existing one fails the test.

Frugality

Accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency, and invention. There are no extra points for growing headcount, budget size, or fixed expenses. It is false that large teams solve problems more efficiently (or better) than small teams.

Earn Trust

We listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. We are vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing. We do not believe our body odor smells like perfume. We benchmark ourselves against the best, and we respect teams of higher skill and higher will.

Dive Deep

We stay connected to the details, and we audit frequently, We are skeptical when metrics and storytelling differ.

Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit

We are obligated to respectfully challenge decisions when we disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting. We have conviction, and we are tenacious. We do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion. Once a decision is made, we commit wholly.

Deliver Results

We focus on the key inputs for their business and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, we rise to the occasion and never settle.
